Copyright guide: protecting your original work online

Our Standards

Use these review criteria to understand how a reported use should be assessed and documented.

A named decision-maker

Identify the rights holder and the individual authorized to approve action. Record any restrictions on their authority, including geographic limits and decisions reserved for counsel.

Evidence that can be checked

Preserve a comparison between the authorized work and the reported use. Identify the location and observation time. Label assumptions so the reviewer can distinguish them from verified facts.

An accurate record of change

Add new observations when a target moves, a license appears or a recipient replies. Preserve the basis for the earlier decision so a correction can be explained and communicated.
