Copyright guide: protecting your original work online

Copyright Protection Guide

Build an ownership record that a reviewer can trace from the original work to the person requesting action.

Identify the work precisely

Record the title, author, version and first authorized release. For a photograph, preserve the source file. For a film clip, identify the edition and time range. US copyright generally begins when original expression is recorded in a sufficiently permanent form.

Trace changes in ownership

Where a publisher, employer or agency manages a work, record how it acquired its rights. Keep the relevant assignment, employment record or license with the asset. Separate rights to music, photography and other contributions where necessary.

Compare the reported use

Capture the surrounding page as well as the apparent match. Check whether permission, an exception or the nature of the use calls for further review. Document any uncertainty before deciding to report.
