Copyright guide: protecting your original work online

Documentation

A practical reference for assembling the records behind a protection request.

Authority record

Name the rights holder, representative and signatory. Specify the covered assets, channels and dates. Record whether the representative may submit a report, withdraw it or respond to a dispute.

YouTube review records

For a review of your copyright management needs, keep client mandates, the works and territories they cover, examples of reuploads, and prior filing references together. For Content ID, distinguish the material for which you control exclusive rights. Share private records through the application or an agreed channel.

Google Search evidence

For each destination URL, identify the original work, the specific passage, image or recording at issue, and the authority behind the request. Record the search result and the status of the source page separately.

Observation record

For each location, capture the URL, asset identifier, context, date, time zone and reviewer. Pair the observation with the original work and the licensing information checked.

Submission and closure record

Retain the approved request, recipient, timestamp and confirmation. Add follow-up correspondence and the final verification. If access changes again, create a dated observation that points back to the earlier record.
